Ninety Degree Blues

Grass browns on a hot

    prairie skillet. The leaves fry.

      Supper will be late.

Screen doors slam brusquely

but children don't want to play

      in the August sun

Heat waves shimmer in

   still air. Clouds sizzle away

      leaving empty sky

Sun-scorched brown cows chew

   thoughtfully and look for shade,

      hides slowly tanning

Even cicadas

   complain loudly in Texas

      heat and hope for rain
